NBAA Florida 12th - 22nd October 2018 - Days 1-4

It was time for another trip out to the Sunshine State, this time to take in the NBAA at Orlando. Phil drove down to Luton (and no doubt scored a few dozen there) to meet up with Colin and John. LBs son-in-law had the pleasure of cab duties to Gatwick.

A pretty quick trip through security saw us airside with a few hours to spare. A window seat and a fullish English brekkie saw a few regular liners hit the book. And yes, Pogo. Nay did score his last BA 320.

Soon it was time for the off with G-CKWB operating the DI7045 to FLL. A rather comfortable flight with a couple of decent films to watch.

We decided to try a different format for the logs this time with the tin having their own page. Included in the normal posts are biz/biz props/mil and museums and the odd liner or two. I have not included the mass of liners at the main airports. If you were there the same day and have a query feel free to ask as I still have the paper logs.

Split into three posts this part covers from arrival down to Miami and back up the East coast to be in position at for the NBAA. Part two will be the Orlando area. Part three leaving Orlando and the trip down the west coast.

Arriving on time at FLL it was the usual long queue at immigration. Once outside the temperature of low 90's with 88% humidity soon hit us. Yowzer! Off to get the car and hit the car park for a few hours. After finding a space it was time to start poling off the biz but within no time at all disaster struck for Pogo. He only went and dropped his scope. It was a goner. Out of respect we left it at least 10 minutes before telling him it'd be the only thing he'd drop on the trip... if only that were the case!

The main carriers at FLL are jetBlue, Southwest and Spirit which use all types. AA/DL/UA are represented by a few mainline types, Silver used Saabs, FedEx 757/767/MDs/208s, Allegiant 320s

Once darkness arrived it was time for some grub. Pogo had been looking forward to his pancakes and as there was an ihop near the hotel he was soon sated. Walgreens was also over the road so he also got his factor 100 sun screen. We'd booked our usual Motel 6 at Dania Beach for the first two nights. It has always been ok but this year standards had dropped. I'll be looking elsewhere next time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The usual routine, 7-11 for brekkie/coffee and to stock up for the day on nibbles and water. Then off for a biz circuit and to sit at the viewing area for a bit. Not surprised that we bumped into Stuart and Liz here.

OPF was as busy as ever on the biz side. Plenty of building work going on by the storage area which meant no access there this time. No photos from here as they don't seem overkeen on you taking pics.

The biz at MIA was quiet but plenty on the liner front. All the American 738MAX were seen here during the trip. No doubt another was delivered as soon as we got back to the UK. Apart from the masses of AAL 738s, 319/321s and E175s the other mainline carriers had a small presence. A variety of overseas long hauls and the usual mix of South American carriers are both regular. The cargo is also rather busy.

Plenty of food options near Sigs but the Denny's skillet got the vote from Nay and Pogo. Full we headed back to the hotel via a quick check of the FLL biz which are included in the mornings list.

Over to FXE where quite a few hangars were shut making it seem a bit quiet. That may be a tad unfair as there are still shedloads here. As has become standard we had a little break up at the viewing area for some photos and to watch the lizards.

After the Motel 6 tonights hotel was breath of fresh air. The Quality Inn lived up to its name. Again there was an ihop right next to the hotel and as we couldn't be bothered to look elsewhere it sufficed. The service was pretty poor though. By the time Nays grub turned up LB and Pogo had finished theirs. To boot Nays order was wrong. Still they gave him that for free and then bought his correct order out. Rude not to eat both.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brekkie included in the hotel this time. Coffee, toast, eggs ,bacon, happy days.

We decided to bin another look at PBI as we wanted to head inland a bit for a Huey and a rare G3 frame.

First port of call was an unplanned stop at Indiantown. Just a few tin logged.

A bit of a mix up on the itinerary meant we'd passed the SEAL Museum. We could have gone back but it was a long day anyway so one for 2020 especially as the MH-60 we require is inside.

They were having a shuffle round on the Embraer ramp at MLB including bringing the Russian out. To say we were rather chuffed at the Japanese Hawkeye is an understatement. Liner wise it is quiet. AAL have a maintenance area with a few bits n bobs

Just the matter of cutting across 60 odd miles to our hotel at Kissimmee next. We'd left it late booking hotels so decided to base ourselves here for the next four nights. The Howard Johnson was very close to the drome but that could wait until tomorrow. The Steak n Shake was next door so that was tonights tucker sorted.

  2. Hi Andy. Nope, no G2s were seen at Okeechobee just the biz listed. We had no hangar access so you never know. Cheers, John.
